What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapid-onset allergic reaction that occurs after exposure to an allergen. This can happen through ingestion (eating or drinking), inhalation, injection, or direct contact with the skin. Epinephrine is the most effective treatment for anaphylaxis, and prompt administration is crucial. Delayed or failure to administer epinephrine can lead to fatal outcomes.

Anaphylaxis can be triggered by a variety of allergens, including certain foods, insect stings, latex, and medications. Common food allergens that can cause anaphylaxis include shellfish, nuts, wheat, and eggs. In addition, insect stings (such as from bees or wasps) and exposure to latex or specific medications can also lead to severe allergic reactions.
